Choosing Curaçao.
The Dutch Caribbean's quieter side. Curaçao sits in the southern Caribbean alongside Aruba and Bonaire, outside the hurricane belt, and runs a smaller, less polished, less expensive all-inclusive market than its better-known neighbor. The AI inventory is dominated by Dreams and Sunscape (both AMResorts brands) plus the new Sandals Royal Curaçao and a handful of independents, with most resorts clustered around Willemstad and the Westpunt peninsula.
The geographic logic: the southern coast hosts the AI cluster. Mambo Beach near Willemstad is the urban-and-resort hybrid; the western Westpunt area is quieter and where the better dive operators sit. The island is bigger than Aruba (171 square miles vs 70) and the diving — the reef wall just offshore — is genuinely first-rate. Willemstad's UNESCO old city is a real cultural draw for a non-trivial half-day.
What works in Curaçao: no hurricanes, low prices relative to the rest of the southern Caribbean, a more authentic island feel than the heavily-developed Aruba, and the best dive infrastructure of any AI destination outside of Belize and the Bay Islands. Sandals Royal Curaçao is also the brand's newer Caribbean entry and one of its higher-rated couples-only properties.
What to weigh: the AI product runs a tier below Aruba's at every price point — fewer brand operators, less polished service, and resorts that haven't been renovated as aggressively. Direct US flights are thinner; most routings connect through Miami or Aruba. And the country's beaches are smaller and pocket-style rather than long-strip — beautiful, but a different aesthetic from the Aruba norm.
The honest filter: Curaçao is correct for the diver, for the southern-Caribbean traveler who finds Aruba too touristy, and for value-first AI buyers willing to trade some polish. It's the wrong call for travelers who need a long-strip beach or the maximum-amenity Aruba product.
