Choosing Honduras.
Roatán and the reef. Honduras's AI market is essentially Bay Islands tourism — Roatán hosts the bulk of the resort inventory, with Henry Morgan, Mayan Princess, Bananarama, and Villa on Dunbar Rock running the AI tier; Utila and Guanaja are smaller and barely have AI presence. The country's mainland AI inventory is minimal; most travelers who book a Honduras AI are going for the reef.
Roatán sits on the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the same reef that runs north past Belize, Mexico, and Tulum — and produces some of the cheapest world-class diving on the planet. West Bay and West End are the two main resort zones; West Bay is the calmer, beach-oriented strip, West End is the diver hub. Both run a mix of AI, modified-AI, and European-plan.
What works in Honduras: the dive value is unbeatable. Certifications and dive packages here run 30–50% cheaper than the comparable Mexican Caribbean equivalent. The AI infrastructure is small but functional, English is widely spoken (Bay Islands have an English-speaking heritage that predates the modern tourism), and US flights to Roatán International from Houston, Miami, and Atlanta are direct. Villa on Dunbar Rock — a small adults-only on its own islet — is among the higher-scored Caribbean AIs on the index.
What to weigh: the AI product itself is mid-tier at best across most of the inventory. The premium operators that dominate the western Caribbean — Hyatt, Excellence, Sandals — have no Roatán presence. Resort food is the weakest of any Caribbean destination in the index. And mainland Honduras carries State Department travel advisories that don't apply to Roatán but still affect some travelers' insurance and routing decisions.
The honest filter: Roatán is correct for divers and divers' partners willing to accept resort-as-base. It's the wrong call for travelers who want the resort to be the point.
