Choosing Saint Martin.
The split island. Saint Martin / Sint Maarten — French in the north, Dutch in the south, one island — is more European-plan resort territory than all-inclusive, but a handful of AI properties cluster around the Dutch side (Sonesta Maho Beach, Sonesta Ocean Point, Divi Little Bay) and on the French side (a smaller, more boutique mix). The country's AI footprint is small and isn't really the reason to visit; the food, the beaches, and the French-versus-Dutch contrast are.
Geographically: the Dutch side hosts the airport (the famous Princess Juliana plane-spotting beach, Maho), the cruise port (Philipsburg), and most of the AI inventory. The French side hosts the better food and the quieter, smaller-scale beaches (Orient Bay, Grand Case). The two sides are 30 minutes apart and crossing the border requires no documentation.
What works in Saint Martin: the food is the best in the Caribbean. Grand Case in particular runs a stretch of French-Caribbean restaurants that genuinely competes with the better-known French islands. The flight infrastructure (SXM direct from many US hubs) is strong. And the contrast between the two halves of the island is real — a single trip lets you toggle between two distinct cultures and cuisines.
What to weigh: the AI product is the thinnest and weakest of any country in the index. Sonesta Maho is the largest AI property and runs mid-tier at best; the better lodging here is non-AI luxury or villa. The 2017 hurricane (Irma) did serious damage and full rebuild took years; some properties haven't fully recovered, while others were built back better. Read recent reviews more carefully than usual.
The honest filter: Saint Martin is correct as a food-and-culture destination, not as an AI destination. Book the European-plan resort and eat off-property, or skip the country if AI maximization is the brief.
