Adults only, in the DR.

The DR's adults-only bench is the Caribbean's best value-for-score story. The 10 worth booking, with the mega-resort branding trap called out.

By All Inclusivity··8 min read

The Dominican Republic has 35 ranked adults-only all-inclusive resorts, and the segment is the Caribbean's best value-for-score story — multiple properties scoring above 91 at sub-$5,000/week, and a sub-$2,500 floor that no other country with this depth of inventory can match. The DR is roughly where Mexico was a decade ago: more volume, less polish at the very top, but more value across the middle than anywhere in the region.

The cluster pattern is sharper here than in Mexico:

  • Cap Cana. The premium enclave south of the airport — Hyatt Zilara, Secrets Cap Cana, Sanctuary Cap Cana, plus the family-side Hyatt Ziva. Newest builds in the country, most consistent service, and the only DR cluster where the top of the bench clears 94.
  • Punta Cana / Bavaro / Uvero Alto. The volume strip — Excellence Group's two flagships, the JOIA Bavaro rebrand, TRS Turquesa, Secrets Tide. Where most of the strict-adults inventory sits, and where the mega-resort trap is most dangerous.
  • Samaná peninsula. Three hours from Punta Cana airport but home to the country's quietest adults-only product and its best beach (Playa Rincón nearby). Bahia Principe's Escape Samana anchors the under-$2,500 floor.
  • La Romana / Bayahibe. South coast, reef-protected water, less sargassum exposure than the east-facing beaches. Secrets La Romana is the adults-only entry; Casa de Campo (European plan) is the luxury option if AI isn't a hard requirement.

The brand pattern: Excellence Group runs the strict-adults volume; AMResorts (Secrets) runs the high-volume mid-tier; Hyatt and Marriott Luxury Collection occupy the Cap Cana premium; Bahia Principe's Escape sub-brand owns the sub-$3,000 floor. Pick the tier first, the property second — and don't trust "adults-only" branding alone at the 1,000-room properties, where the calm doesn't survive the scale.

The 10 best adults-only all-inclusives in the Dominican Republic

01
Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana
96
/ 100

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$7.4k / wk
The cleanest expression of DR adults-only luxury. Hyatt's adults-only flag in Cap Cana — the country's most curated resort enclave — anchors the premium top end at $7,421/week. Swim-up suites, eight restaurants, oceanfront everything, and a scoring profile (96) that clears every other DR adults-only property on the index. The "Mexico-money for Mexico-grade product" pick on this side of the Caribbean.
02
JOIA Bávaro By Iberostar
95
/ 100

JOIA Bávaro By Iberostar

Bavaro, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$6.3k / wk
The under-the-radar pick. JOIA is Iberostar's higher-tier sub-brand layered onto the Bavaro complex — adults-only, upgraded service, à la carte dining without the buffet compromise that drags down the rest of the Iberostar inventory here. Less brand recognition than Excellence or Secrets, but a 95.3 score at $6,318/week is one of the sharpest score-to-price profiles in the Caribbean. The right read for travelers willing to look past the household names.
03
Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa
94
/ 100

Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$6.2k / wk
The AMResorts flagship in Cap Cana. 457 suites, 18+ enforced, the cleanest Secrets-brand product in the country and the canonical answer for travelers who want the Secrets formula at full Cap Cana finish. Score 94 at $6,230/week sits a notch below Hyatt Zilara next door but delivers the same beach and the same enclave at slightly lower cost. The default Cap Cana adults-only pick when Hyatt is sold out.
04
Excellence Punta Cana
94
/ 100

Excellence Punta Cana

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$3.6k / wk
The best value-for-score on the whole DR adults-only bench. Excellence Group's original Punta Cana property — strict 18+, 458 suites, swim-up rooms in the upper categories, and a 93.7 score at $3,639/week that lands inside the top ten while undercutting every Cap Cana property by 40-plus percent. If the brief is "boutique-grade adults-only at mid-tier price," this is the cleanest answer in the Caribbean.
05
Excellence El Carmen
93
/ 100

Excellence El Carmen

Uvero Alto, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$4.6k / wk
The newer Excellence Group entry, in Uvero Alto north of the standard Punta Cana strip. Quieter beach, less density, the same strict-adults policy and à la carte dining program as Excellence Punta Cana but on a property that's a full generation newer. Score 93 at $4,593/week — a step up in finish from its sister property and worth the extra spend if renovation vintage matters to you.
06
TRS Turquesa Hotel
93
/ 100

TRS Turquesa Hotel

Bavaro, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$3.5k / wk
The Palladium Group's adults-only carve-out inside the Grand Palladium Bavaro complex — upgraded service, private beach section, dedicated restaurants, and access to the broader resort if you want it. Strict 18+, 372 suites, 92.7 score at $3,487/week. The cleanest answer in the sub-$3,500 strict-adults bracket and consistently the highest- rated property at this price point in Bavaro.
07
Bahia Principe Escape Samana
91
/ 100

Bahia Principe Escape Samana

Punta Balandra, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$2.1k / wk
The Samaná pick, and the floor on this list at $2,079/week. Bahia Principe's adults-only Escape brand on the Punta Balandra peninsula — three hours from Punta Cana airport, rougher terrain, one of the country's most photographable beaches a short drive away (Playa Rincón). Score 91.3 at sub-$2,100 is the strongest value ratio anywhere in the DR adults-only segment. The trade-off is the transfer; the upside is the quiet.
08
Sanctuary Cap Cana, A Luxury Collection Resort, Dominican Republic, Adult All-inclusive
91
/ 100

Sanctuary Cap Cana, A Luxury Collection Resort, Dominican Republic, Adult All-inclusive

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$4.8k / wk
The Marriott Luxury Collection flag in Cap Cana — castle-themed architecture that reads as either appealingly distinct or dated depending on your taste, but the bones (Cap Cana location, 322 suites, swim-up category, 18+ enforced) are right. Score 91.3 at $4,788/week makes it the value entry inside the Cap Cana cluster, several thousand dollars below Hyatt Zilara and Secrets without dropping out of the enclave.
09
Secrets La Romana Resort & Spa
91
/ 100

Secrets La Romana Resort & Spa

Bayahibe, Dominican Republic·Adults Only·$4.1k / wk
The La Romana adults-only entry, on Bayahibe Bay an hour south of Punta Cana. Quieter coast, calmer water (Bayahibe is reef-protected and less sargassum-prone than the east side), and proximity to Saona Island for day trips. 444 suites, 18+, score 91.3 at $4,104/week. The right pick when the priority is calm water and a less-trafficked beach without leaving the AMResorts comfort zone.

What to actually pick

If you want the cleanest luxury: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is the unambiguous top of the bench — score 96, newest build in the premium enclave, no comparable adults-only product in the country at any price.

If you want value: Excellence Punta Cana at sub-$3,700/week is the strongest score-to-price ratio in the DR adults-only segment — a top-ten score at roughly half what Cap Cana costs.

If you want strict couples-grade enforcement: the Excellence Group properties (Excellence Punta Cana and Excellence El Carmen) run the tightest 18+ policy in the country. Not couples-only the way Beloved is in Mexico, but the closest equivalent.

If you want under-the-radar: JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar — the Iberostar sub-brand layered onto Bavaro, scoring 95.3 at $6,318/week with a fraction of the brand recognition of its Secrets and Excellence neighbors.

If you want the Cap Cana cluster without paying Hyatt-level: Sanctuary Cap Cana puts you inside the enclave at $4,788/week — several thousand below the Hyatt and Secrets entries on the same beach.

If you want quiet at any cost: Bahia Principe Escape Samana on the Samaná peninsula — three-hour transfer, $2,079/week, the country's quietest adults-only product and the strongest value ratio on this whole list.

The honest gap

The biggest pitfall in DR adults-only AI is the Punta Cana mega-resort marketed as adults-only that doesn't deliver actual quiet at scale. Multiple 800-to-1,200-room properties on the Bavaro strip carry "adults-only" branding, and "no children" doesn't translate to "calm" when you're sharing the resort with 1,500 other guests. Weigh score over brand recognition, prefer properties under 500 rooms when boutique-feel matters, and read recent reviews for renovation vintage — the gap between a five-year and fifteen-year-old room at the same brand in this country can be enormous.
